How goes Loc Lovers! The family here at Spirit Love Locs is coming through with some key advice on how to prevent dry locs. For any beginner’s out there to you tried and true veterans, here are some ways you can lock in that moisture to keep your dreads silky and healthy.
Moisture and Condition Often! Seems like a no brainer, right? However, you’d be surprised how many people forget to moisturize their hair, loc lovers or otherwise! Although, when it comes to dreads, using moisturizers that penetrate deep into the fibers of their hair are important, especially for dreadlocks that have a lot of volume to them. Giving the moisturizer insufficient time to really seep deep into the fibers causes only a portion of your dreads to be moisturized, and this leads to breakages and brittle locs which will have to undergo deep treatment to get them back to their former lusciousness. This ties in with conditioning, since this also traps in the moisture to your hair fibers, ensuring that they stay healthy, but do be warned! This is best for locs that have been in the works for some time, as conditioning with new locs can cause them to unravel or loosen since they haven’t had the time to “set”. In both cases of moisturizing and conditioning, using leave-in products such as our Hydrating Leave-in Conditioner will ensure the health and longevity of your dreads, while fighting off dry-scalp and protecting against breakages over time.
Overwashing and Underdrying: Another way dry locs occur is due to overwashing and underrying. Many who start their dreadlock journey’s overwash their locs, which causes a host of problems. Oversaturation of the hair fibers and especially of the scalp can cause flaking, breakages and thinning due to the oversaturation of water. Continuation of overwashing can lead to a dry, itchy scalp that inevitably dries out your locs faster. Pair this with underdrying, due to the imbalance of moisture, and the trapping of moisture in certain regions due to improper drying. You can cause your locs to loosen, but more importantly you can trap odors and bacteria that leads to further breaks, thinning, and a mildew smell to develop deep within your dreads. Ensuring that you thoroughly dry your locs can prevent this from occurring.
Natural Oils and Remedies! Natural remedies are a no-brainer for anyone in and outside of the loc’s community who want to ensure the health and longevity of their hair, but knowing which natural oils to use is just as important. At Spirit Love Locs, we utilize rose water and aloe vera, both shown to hydrate hair fibers, and prevent breakages. Other natural oils such as coconut oil have been shown to seal healthy moisture into hair fibers to ensure their longevity and lusciousness. Our Hydrating Leave-in Conditioner uses a combination of natural oils and plant extracts to ensure the vibrancy and health for all, and is definitely a product you want to have to keep those locs looking beautiful and lush!
